Last Day of TT Induction Program 2010

We kick-start the activities in Photography Club with this image taken post cultural event.

It comprises of 4 images merged in a Panoramic View with the help of Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Photo Credits and Editing: Mohammad Navaid Khan

Many a times, we use to put date stamps on the photographs that don’t look good. It really detracts from the picture. One nice thing about digital cameras is that they automatically embed the date in the EXIF metadata that is stored in the file, so you don’t need to have the date directly on the image. If you do need to put the date directly on a digital photo, add some extra pixels to the bottom of the document and put the date there or at least put it on an inconspicuous part of the image.

But now comes a question, if you already have a date stamp on the photo then how to remove it??

There are several ways for it

1. Remove the Date by Cropping the Picture: Cropping is an easy fix, but it isn’t always ideal, as it may even cut out of the picture.

2. Remove the Date by Blocking it Out: This is again a simple technique where you can make a rectangular selection around the date and filled it with a solid color that is similar to the background and then blurred the edges so they would blend into the surroundings. But it’s clearly not seamless. However, the result is a lot less jarring than the bright yellow date we had in the original photo.

3. Remove the Date with the Rubber Stamp or Clone Tool: Most photo-editing software has a rubber stamp or clone tool that can work well for removing a date from a photo, especially if the date is over a solidly textured area of the photo. Although the cloning is not that obvious when the image is viewed at 100% magnification, it can be detected at a higher magnification.

4. Remove the Date with the Healing or Patch Tool (Photoshop): Photoshop offers a patch tool and a healing brush which quickly remove flaws while preserving the background texture in the surrounding area. Photoshop Elements has similar tools — the spot healing tool and the healing brush. The overall results might not be perfect, but they are pretty darn good.

5. Akvis Retoucher: This is the best tool available for removing irrelevant texts or objects, for example, a date stamp and the results are very good.

Akvis Retoucher:

AKVIS Retoucher is an efficient program for photo restoration and photo retouching, which not only removes dust, scratches, stains and other defects that appear on damaged photos but is also able to reconstruct missing parts of a photo using the information of the surrounding areas.

The work is done automatically; you only have to indicate areas to be restored, push the button, and here you are – the surface becomes smooth and imperfections disappear. It looks like magic when you observe the scratches vanishing before your very eyes.

It is possible to remove date stamps, logos, small irrelevant details(wires, refuse bins, etc) and even bigger objects (i.e. people who fell into the shot by accident, cars in the background). If you need to increase the canvas size (from one side or proportionally) to bring the main object into focus, i.e. to center it, AKVIS Retoucher will help you to extend image patterns to the blank areas of the canvas.

AKVIS Retoucher can be used for the following purposes:

a) Restore old and damaged photos from your family archive by removing scratches, stains and other defects

b) Improve the composition of photos by removing the date stamp, distracting details (wires, refuse bins, etc) and by extending the photo canvas (increase the image canvas and the plug-in will recreate the image patterns in the blank areas)

c) Reconstructing the missing parts of the photo (to restore a torn photo, in polygraphy to extend the borders of a layout that does not have space for cropping).

Now lets see how it works…

Let’s take a photo that contains a date stamp:

1

The wires in the upper part of the photo spoil the picture, too. They look irrelevant on this picturesque photo of a park. We will seize the occasion and get rid of these wires, minor scratches and the date stamp altogether.

First of all we should select the irrelevant objects. You can use any selection tool of your photo editor to make the selection.

The easiest way to make a precise selection in Adobe Photoshop is to use the Quick Mask mode. Switch to the Quick Mask mode and paint over the defects with a pencil or a hard edge brush.

2

Then switch to the Standard mode and inverse the selection. As a result, the date stamp, the wires, and the scratches get selected.

3

When the areas for restoration are selected you can call AKVIS Retoucher plug-in.

a)      In Adobe Photoshop select Filter – AKVIS – Retoucher in the menu

b)      In Corel Paint Shop Pro select Effects – Plugins- AKVIS – Retoucher

c)      In Corel PHOTO-PAINT use Effects – AKVIS – Retoucher.

4

and press the button 6

The program restores the picture on its own; you can wait and see the defects disappearing.

Here is the outcome…..
